Level 2 Media Studies - consideration may be given to students who did not take Level 2 Media Studies based on Level 2 English writing grades


Course Content 

Year 13 Media Studies builds on the teaching and learning in Year 12 Media to further examine the the relationships between the production of media and its audience and the societies that contextualise both.

Topics taught include, but are not limited to: 

  • Developments that have significantly changed the media we consume and the ways that we consume it 
  • Short genre film-making 
  • In-depth study of a media genre and its relationship to Western society

Subject Overview

Term 1
AS91496
A largely interest-driven assessment, in which ākonga select a significant development in the media they consume, and the contextual significance of their chosen development. This is open to changes in technology, ideology, and so on.


AS 91494
The ākonga work in groups of two or three to plan and conceptualise a short film of 5 to 10 minutes.

Term 2
AS 91494
The ākonga work in groups of two or three to produce a concept and plan for a short film of 5 to 10 minutes.

AS91495
The ākonga take the plan developed earlier, and produce a short film based on their planning in AS91494

Term 3
AS91493
The ākonga engage in a Genre Study, focussing on Dystopian Science Fiction. The primary focus will be on social issues of the 2010s as reflected by films of the period.
