We live in a media-saturated culture. It is important to think critically about the messages that are constructed and communicated through mass media, who creates them, and the impact they have on individuals and societies. Year 12 Media Studies introduces ākonga | students to storytelling through film, examines the societal changes in the USA from 1960 to the present day, and looks at how these changes influenced film genre.



Subject Overview

Term 1
A rotation of AS91249, AS91250 or AS91254

AS91249 - A study of narrative structures in texts, comparing the Hero's Journey and Narrative Structures based on Russian folklore, and how they are used in contemporary films.

AS91250 - A study of how a specific demographic, in this case teenage girls, are represented in the media we consume, and the implications this carries.

AS91254 - A study of an ethical issue in the media we consume, specifically how advertising and sponsorships have become intertwined with professional sport and sports broadcasts, and the nature of those partnerships.

Term 2
A combination of AS91252 and AS91253

Referred to as the Production unit, students will work in groups of two or three to conceptualise, plan, film, edit and produce a music video.

Term 3
AS91251

The Genre unit focusses on Superhero films, due to the immense popularity of the genre. At level 2, the ākonga will examine how the genre is crafted to appeal to audiences, how the genre changes as time passes, and the influence of money on the genre.
