Year 11 English
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Dr I. Michell.
The Year 11 English course delivers the refreshed Aotearoa New Zealand Curriculum and assesses against the new Level 1 NCEA Assessment Standards. In Terms 1 and 2 ākonga | students will enjoy a thematic study of a rich range of text types – including at least one novel, a film, short stories and poetry – and produce visual, spoken and written responses to demonstrate understanding of the studied text(s) and their context(s). Further building language skills and appreciation of the purpose and audience for different text types, ākonga will study and then employ specific stylistic conventions to produce externally assessed writing in Term 3. The emphasis will be on demonstrating intention as an author, using language features and text conventions appropriate to purpose and audience. Ākonga will also practise the skills of close-reading throughout the year and demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar texts in an external examination. This course is designed to enhance ākonga enjoyment and confidence in making meaning, through reading, listening and viewing; and creating meaning, through writing, speaking and presenting.
